the y chromosome is not useless, it carries the male traits in it. The only reason why this becomes a problem is if there is a problem with the x chromosome. If this happens in girls they have a back 2 x chromosomes so if one is bad they still have another one. But since guys only have one x, they can't rely on a second one for backup. This is why genetic mutations are much more common in guys than in girls.
